FAQ'S

The Hurricane Club is the philanthropic arm of the University of Miami Athletics Department. Our goal is to provide the best resources for our 400+ student-athletes to excel in competition, in the classroom and in life.

In addition to providing scholarship support for our student-athletes that represent the U, you also unlock unique benefits as a Hurricane Club member. To explore what benefits are associated with each level click HERE Hurricane Club Donation Levels.

To have access to interior parking at Hard Rock Stadium, you have to be an active Hurricane Club member. Every spring parking allocation takes place, in which you get a selection time based on your current level. The higher your level, the earlier your parking selection time will be, giving you the best odds at the lot you would like.

Similar to our process for parking selection, Hurricane Club members receive priority within our allotment for away games and post season play. The request process typically takes place in early summer and you are allocated seats based on your current Hurricane Club level. Please remember that all requests are just that, requests, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to fulfill the full request if demand for a game is high.

Joining the Hurricane Club is easy! You can call us at 1-800-GO-CANES, email us at hurricaneclub@miami.edu, or mail a check to 1340 S Dixie Hwy, Suite 120 Coral Gables, FL 33146. We are also more than happy to answer any questions you may have at the phone number and email provided.

Your gift to Miami Athletics directly impacts the lives of student-athletes across all 18 teams. Miami Athletics strives to provide opportunities that will best position our student-athletes for success in all facets of their lives, at Miami and beyond, but that is not possible without your support.

To learn more about giving to Miami Athletics contact our development staff at athleticdevelopment@miami.edu or call 305-284-2299.

Student Impact Donations, Golden Canes Society Memberships, capital project and program-specific gifts are tax-deductible minus any benefits received. An official University of Miami tax receipt will be issued once the gift is received.

For any tax matter, please consult your tax professional.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ended the ability to deduct 80 percent of charitable contributions attached to the purchase of tickets. So, unfortunately, your Premium Experience Donation is non-deductible.

Miami Athletics is committed to raising the financial support necessary to ensure the success of our student-athletes and the long-term future of our athletic department. Through the generous contributions of our donors, we provide current and future 'Canes with the scholarship support, resources, and facilities necessary to achieve excellence while at the U and long after they graduate.

Major gifts can be restricted to a sport program, scholarship, endowment or facility project, or can be unrestricted for immediate and greatest needs. To learn more about giving to Miami Athletics contact our development staff at athleticdevelopment@miami.edu or call 305-284-2299

Securities

Gifts of stock and bonds are welcomed at the Hurricane Club; however, these gifts require special planning and consultation with your professional financial advisor and the Hurricane Club staff. The University recommends that donors who have decided to make a gift of stock or via wire transfer contact Athletic Development at athleticdevelopment@miami.edu. Transfer instructions will be provided.

Gifts of appreciated securities typically carry benefits not associated with gifts made by check, cash or credit card:

  • You avoid capital gains tax. Any gain is taxable if you sell stock or mutual fund shares yourself, but not if you transfer ownership to the University.
  • Your charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes is based on the full, fair market value of the shares on the date the gift is made.
  • You receive credit from UM for the full fair market value of the shares, but the cost to you is only your original purchase price.

Donor-Advised Fund

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a simple and tax-smart way to streamline and centralize your charitable giving. When you contribute cash, securities, or other assets to a DAF, you are generally eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. The contributed funds are then invested for tax-free growth, and you can recommend grants to any IRS-qualified public charity, including the University of Miami. Opening a DAF account allows you flexibility to make donations to all the causes you support.
